Read about pertinent issues relating to Eileen's case, and the wider implications of the breakdown in the healthcare system.
Eileen's Story:
Eileen does not deserve to be locked in a prison setting for the rest of her life. The happily married couple were fine for 62 years, and had planned adequately for needs as they aged. Island Health separated and abused them, and this injustice has cost them more than $140,000 in legal fees.
Abuse of power:
Health Authorities are causing significant harm to some seniors, and using health care funding to cover up mistakes. Thousands of people are detained in BC each year, against their will. Does Canada have a charter of rights and freedoms?
Workable Solutions
There is a need to renew trust in the health care system for seniors in BC. The health authorities need to have independent oversight to provide transparency and accountability.
Seniors' Health:
Most seniors can maintain or improve their overall health and quality of life. A substantial amount of health care effort should be directed to maintaining seniors' health and preventing illness.
Planning Ahead:
Planning and preparing for the last stages of life should be done while a person is able. Leaving your fate to the wind may not be the best plan.
